Yorkshire Terrier is a small adorable toy dog breed. They have a healthy lifespan of nearly 15 years or even more. Yorkies stand 6-7 inches high and weigh approximately 7 pounds. Their eyes are usually bright and the nose is always black. The ears are erect or V-shaped. But, the most prominent physical feature of the Yorkie is its coat of hair that covers nearly its entire body.
A Yorkie is difficult to miss as it has a unique shiny and silky coat. Its hair is soft to touch, straight and grows constantly. Black or tan is the common color of the Yorkie coat, but, you may also find them in off-white, blue, gold or light brown colors. Yorkie puppies always have darker hair that change its color later. It takes more than 2-3 years for the color of the coat to reach its final tint. Most of the time, the hair on the back are seen to be parted. The hair on the head of the Yorkie is also tied with a band or a bow.
Temperament
Yorkies are extremely loyal and lovable pets. They are also well-known for their intelligence. They make excellent pets as they are fond of people, especially children. They love to be petted and enjoy being with people. Although smaller in size, Yorkies make good watch dogs because of their ability to protect their belongings. As Yorkies are a breed of Terrier, they have hunting abilities. They usually shed very little hair, but, regular grooming like combing the hair is necessary. Yorkies, that are used as show dogs, require hours of combing. Dental hygiene is also essential for these dogs.
Yorkies love activity and exercise, and hence, it is important to take them for walks or play with them. They are also easier to train as they have natural intelligence. But, it is very important to train them in early age for they are even susceptible to certain bad habits. Younger children should be specially taught to carry and handle Yorkies properly. They can adjust to the new environment and surroundings quickly. They are also vulnerable to some health problems like hypoglycemia, digestive problems and vertebral problems.
