How Important are Pet ID Tags?

Home / Pet Products / How Important are Pet ID Tags?

It’s any pet owners worst fear: their pet escapes or gets lost. Yet, it happens daily even to the most responsible pet owners. One of the best ways to protect your pet (and your heart) is to invest in pet ID tags. This simple piece of plastic or metal can make all the difference to ensure your pet makes it back home safely.

What are Pet ID Tags?

Pet ID tags are typically made of plastic or metal and hang from your pet’s collar. Thanks to all kinds of modern technology, they are available in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. That means they can accommodate your personality and, of course, your pet’s personality, too!

Each tag should include the following three essential pieces of information:

  • Your name
  • Your phone number
  • The city in which you reside

If possible, you can also include your pet’s name. However, that piece of information isn’t quite as essential in an emergency.

Where to Purchase Pet ID Tags

Thanks to the huge trend toward pet ownership and pet pampering, the options for pet accessories abound. This includes pet ID tags, as well. So, let’s take a look at some of the best places to purchase your pet’s tags.

Petco

Petco offers a huge variety of custom and engraved pet ID tags. It almost seems every shape or color tag is offered here. They even have a wide selection of themed tags like sports teams and holidays.

ID tag prices average from about $10 to $17 per tag.

Chewy.com

This online pet superstore offers everything from food to toys to, yep, you guessed it, ID tags.

However, they offer two distinct styles. The first is your usual tag that dangles from the collar. They are available in many shapes and colors to suit your style. Additionally, you can choose the finish of the tag like brushed stainless steel or anodized aluminum. The average prices of the dangle ID tags are $6 to $10.

The second style is the Road ID tag. This unique style lays flat against the collar versus dangling to help eliminate any snagging. These are engravable and available in three different finishes. You can expect to pay about $20 each for this style.

Etsy

Oh, Etsy. Is there any problem you can’t solve? Well, if there is, it’s not in the pet ID tag department. Let’s just say the choices here are vast and can be overwhelming! Etsy sellers offer anything from the whimsy and funny to more subdued and mellow. With such a massive selection, you’re able to find styles ranging from $5 to $20 per tag.

To help ensure your pet stays home where he/she belongs, you’ll can follow a few simple tips:

  • Crate your pet when you’re not home. This helps prevent them from sneaking right past you once you open the door at home.
  • Check your fence. Backyard fences are often the culprit with worn slats or small openings that are just big enough for your pet to slink through and wander the neighborhood.
  • Use a leash. Even when you’re certain your pet will stay right beside you, there’s always the risk that their curiosity will get the best of them.

You can’t be too safe when it comes to your pets!

Summary

Pet ID tags overall are a small investment for a big peace of mind. While it doesn’t prevent your pet from escaping, it does contribute to them returning back home safely. Now, you just have narrow down your pet’s perfect ID tag style!
