Crossbreeding of purebred dogs give rise to many of the mix breeds that we see today. A description of a few of such hybrid dogs is given in this article.
Did You Know?
Crossbreeding reduces the negative traits of purebreds. It helps in creating more genetically enhanced breeds with positive qualities and are more desired by human for their novelty.
For a dog to be called a mixed breed, the breeding should occur without human intervention. On the contrary, when humans breed two dogs of pure breeds, then the offspring is called a crossbred dog. Even though these terms are distinct from one another, people tend to use the word ‘mix breed’ as a blanket term for all hybrid dogs. The misnomer, ‘mix breed’ is even more confusing as it can also refer to a dog whose parental lineage is unknown or quite difficult to find. A dog of crossbreeding origins is named after his purebred parents. Generally, a portmanteau of the parent dogs’ names are preferred. For example, a crossbreed of Rottweiler and Doberman is called Rotterman. Most crossbreeds are developed as pets, rather than for any commercial use like hunting, racing or herding.
The following is a list of crossbreeds of dogs that have originated from the top five most favorite purebred dogs. The names of these dogs are derived from their parents’ names.
Crossbreeds of Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retriever is an all-rounder breed of dogs. These dogs are friendly, non-hostile and sturdy. The retrievers get their name from their natural talent of retrieving objects with ease. They love fetching games and at the same time enjoy playing in water. They make good family dogs and hence, are preferred by most of the people as pets. They are also used by the police force for tracing the scent found at crime scenes.

The German Shepherd, also known as Alsatian, is an extremely strong and sober dog. It is specially used as a hunting dog due to its courageous abilities. It is also used as a sheep dog, to watch, protect and maintain the herd. It is an excellent option for a watch dog. However, it’s not very suitable as children’s pet.

As long as there are different breeds of dogs evolving every time, we may continue to get new and unique breeds of dogs. Nevertheless, crossbreeding without logically thinking of the consequences, may produce undesired outcomes. Even though, many crossbreeds are found to be tougher than their purebred parents, crossbreeding the hybrids can dilute this effect, thus giving rise to weak offspring.
Though purebred or crossbred dogs are much coveted by dog-lovers, a good old mutt (another name for a mix breed) is also quite adorable and is as unique as any other dog. Perhaps, not knowing his ancestry adds an element of mystery to his personality and he might readily spring a big surprise on you from time to time.
