The Boston Terrier-Chihuahua is one incredible mix, all thanks to his equally incredible parents. DogAppy tells you all that you need to know about the gorgeous Boston Chihuahua.
Wait until you hear this one …
While portmanteaus are common among all mixed breeds, the Boston Terrier-Chihuahua mix does emerge a clear winner. This dog is usually referred to as the ‘Boston Chihuahua’ or the ‘Bo-Chi’, but there’s one name that simply stands out―the Boston Chi Party.
The Boston Terrier-Chihuahua mix is an adorable pet, suitable for apartment dwellers and families alike. Being an offspring of two of the most popular dog breeds―the Boston Terrier and the Chihuahua―this little pooch packs in a whole lot of personality.
Before we get to know him better, let’s take a brief look at the parents.
BOSTON TERRIER
Height: 12 – 15 inches at the shoulder
Weight: 10 – 25 lb.
Lifespan: 13 – 15 years
The Boston Terrier is an ‘all-American’ breed, with their peculiar tuxedo markings having earned them the moniker of the ‘American gentleman’. And gentlemen they sure are! Historically, this breed was developed to indulge in horrific blood sports, but it wasn’t long before people realized that a dog―any dog―is always a reflection of his upbringing. This dog is extremely intelligent, lively, and very lovable, with an impishly stubborn streak.
CHIHUAHUA
Height: 6 – 9 inches at the shoulder
Weight: 3 – 6 lb.
Lifespan: 10 – 18 years
The Chihuahua holds the distinction of being the world’s smallest dog, but you shouldn’t let his size fool you. This little guy is a firecracker―very intelligent, feisty, and quite opinionated (his yelps can be seriously annoying to some). His size makes him a delicate being; Chihuahuas are not meant for any kind of rumble and tumble.
Boston Terrier-Chihuahua Mix Characteristics
Physical features
- Most Bo-Chis tend to resemble the Boston Terrier, although this may not necessarily hold true.
- This mix has a stout and muscular build.
- He will weigh between 10 and 13 pounds on an average.
- The head will be large, with the ears possibly standing upright. His eyes will be round and very expressive.
- This dog’s tail will be short, or may even be absent.
- The coat is soft, shiny, and short, which calls for very little maintenance.
Temperament
- The Bo-Chi is a very intelligent dog, and is a delight to train. Take note that he can get stubborn, so it is up to the owner to be actively involved in the dog’s training and socializing.
- Trust him to be very active, energetic, and eager to learn new tricks. With the right training techniques, you will discover him to be a quick learner.
- The Bo-Chi is open to meeting people and is not inherently suspicious. That said, he does tend to forge deep bonds with the people he loves, and tends to follow them around everywhere.
- Most Bo-Chis don’t have the Chihuahua’s yapping bark. In fact, this dog is not particularly a frequent barker, but does alert you in case he spots a stranger or an intruder.
Health and Grooming
- The Bo-Chi mix is long-lived, with an average lifespan of 15 years.
- There are little to no concerns on the health front, as long as you keep your pup up-to-date on vaccinations and routine checkups.
- Your dog may have an underbite―not a serious issue; you need to feed him soft food to help him chew easily.
- His coat is short and shiny, which needs to be brushed regularly. Bathe him as frequently as the vet recommends. He does not shed a lot.
- Being a small dog, he is not built to withstand extreme weather. Ensure that you protect him from the elements.
- The Bo-Chi loves to run around and explore his surroundings. Therefore, keep your yards and windows protected so that he does not make a successful escape.
- Indulge him in moderate exercise every day―take him on short walks and make him run around or play interactive games.
Your Boston Terrier-Chihuahua mix will be a lively and loving companion to you and your family. Make sure that you reciprocate his affection and loyalty in equal measure, if not more.
